Ethiopian Midwives Association

Ethiopian Midwives Association (EMwA) is a professional association represents Ethiopian Midwives. It is established in 1992 and registered under the new Ethiopia Civil Society’s Law. The association has eleven chapter offices in all regions and city administrations. EMwA is a member of the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) since 1993. There are 16,925 midwives in Ethiopia among them 7,000 of midwives across the nation are registered as a member. Over the past 28 years the association has developed its experiences in working with development partners in line to Ethiopian Ministry of Health (MOH) and Regional Health Bureaus’ (RHB) needs and contributing its part in improving the health mothers, Newborns, children, adolescent and youth.

To see every woman, newborn and their families have an access to standard midwifery care

Mission:

• To promote and strengthening the midwifery profession, enhance the expansion, performance and status of Midwifery profession through adapting quality and evidence-based practices;
• To adhering to the code of Ethics; and empowering the professionals to reduce maternal, newborn and child morbidity and mortality,
• To improving youth sexual and reproductive health in Ethiopia.

Goal:

Contributing towards the reduction of maternal and child mortality and morbidity in Ethiopia

What We Do?

EMwA has developed a strategy plan for the period 2016-2020 which is aligns with the Federal Ministry of Health’s; Health Sector Transformation Plan I (HSTP_I 2016-2020). EMwA has four strategic directions that guides the strategic plan execution namely; 1) Capacity Building, 2) Advocacy, 3) Networking and partnership & 4) Research and publication.

EMwA have an ample experience in executing various high impact projects in partnership with International confederation of Midwives and Leardal Global Health, UNICEF, UNFPA, Jhpiego, Pathfinder International, and other local professional Associations to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

EMwA has implementing different projects across Ethiopia and our program focuses on the following major areas:

• Strengthening the quality of Maternal, Neonatal, Child, Adolescent and youth services
• Strengthening the competencies of Midwives and other health care professionals
• Supporting and strengthening Midwifery teaching higher education institutions
• Strengthening Continuing professional Development
• Abandoning Gender based violence especially female genital mutilation
• COVID-19 Response

Current Projects

• Health Workforce Improvement Program (HWIP) project in collaboration with Jhpiego
• COVID-19 Response project in collaboration with eleven professional Associations
• Strengthening SRH - Institutional Collaboration Projects – Orange Knowledge Programme with Health e Foundation
• USAID Transform: Primary Health Care Project as consortium member to implement on Result 2:-Increased sustainable quality of service delivery across the PHCU’s continuum of care
• Developing Compassionate, Respectful and Caring (CRC) health workforce project in collaboration with professional association
• Strengthening maternal and Child Health in collaboration with UNFPA
• Catchment based mentorship for midwives in collaboration with MOH
• Abandoning Female Genital Mutilation in Somali Region, Gode city Administration
• Research and education to strengthen midwives professional commitment to quality health services.
